Average hospital payer mix in every state

On average, Wisconsin hospitals have the highest commercial payer mix in the country (78.1 percent), while Washington, D.C., hospitals have the lowest (47.9 percent), according to an April analysis from Definitive Healthcare.
Hospital payer mix is the percentage of revenue facilities make from primarily commercial insurance plans, Medicare and Medicaid.
Definitive calculated the average hospital payer mix in every state using payer data on revenue, charges, discharges and patient days. The final figures were aggregated from the most recent 12-month interval in the company's database and updated using data from October 2022. In total, the data reflects more than 5,900 U.S. hospitals.
Maryland has the highest Medicare mix (29.6 percent) and Hawaii has the lowest (10.7 percent). Washington, D.C., has the highest Medicaid mix (31.3 percent) while South Dakota has the lowest (5.4 percent).
